SLLS held its first workshop for couples in
mixed relationships on 22nd May 2005. Over
20 people plus children attended. The couples included those, such as
me and my wife, who have been together for many years and those whose
relationship is only a few years old. Some of the couples were mixed
race as well as religion.
The afternoon
was led by Judy Thwaites from Kingston Liberal Synagogue, the Rabbi and
me. After everyone had introduced themselves and told us something of
their story we broke into smaller groups to discuss the problems caused
by mixed relationships. We discussed things such as parental
opposition, religious up-bringing of children, and what to do on
religious festivals, plus a whole host of other matters. For all of us
it was good just to talk to other people who had dealt with or were
facing difficulties similar to one’s own.
The feedback
from the afternoon was very positive and we intend to hold another such
event – and a follow up event to this one – soon.
