Sunday 8 May marked the 60th Anniversary of the end of the Second World War in Europe.  It was also Yom HaShoah and the anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto uprising.  These  momentous events were remembered at Anglo-Jewry's Commemoration in London's Logan Hall, Bloomsbury.  Veterans, survivors, their families and figures from across the Community were present to witness the parading of AJEX standards, the testament of witnesses and the place of honour given to 4 Torah scrolls rescued from the Nazis.  A Torah Mantle belonging to SLLS was used to cover one of these scrolls and Deputy Chairman Philip Walker, representing SLLS, was privileged to take this scroll onto the stage in the company of 3 more scrolls carried by representatives of other congregations.  These mute witnesses bring guidance from our past to lead us into the future - 'If I am not for myself, who will  be for me? And if I am only for myself, what am I?  And if not now when?" - Rabbi Hillel, 'Sayings of the Fathers' (Pirke Avot)
