GETTING TO SOUTH LONDON
LIBERAL SYNAGOGUE, 1 PRENTIS RD, STREATHAM, LONDON SW16 1QB
South London Liberal Synagogue is in Streatham
- just south of Brixton and east of Balham/Tooting. Prentis Road
runs between Streatham High Road and Garrad’s Road
(the side of Tooting Bec Common).
Drivers
cannot enter Prentis Road from
Streatham High Road – you must approach either from Garrad’s Road
or from Ockley Road, a side-street running off Becmead Avenue. The
only available parking is in these roads.
There are
two main ways to get to the synagogue by public transport - either
get the Tube plus a bus, or take an overground train
(1) TUBE + BUS (OR WALK)
SLLS is a long walk (20 minutes) from the nearest
Tube stations – Balham and Tooting Bec (Northern
Line), but there are buses. The Victoria Line to
Brixton is a good alternative – as six bus routes run from
Brixton to Streatham.
From Balham Station get the 315 bus
to the corner of Garrad’s Road and Prentis Road (5-10 minutes).
From Tooting Bec, buses 249 and 319 run along Tooting
Bec Road, and journey time is short (5 minutes): there are stops at
the corner of Garrad’s Road and at St Leonard’s Church (near
Streatham High Road).
From Brixton Station, no less than six bus
routes all run from in front of the station up to Streatham High
Road: 109, 118, 133, 159, 250, 333. The journey takes 15-20
minutes. Get off at the Odeon Cinema (corner of Pendennis Road) –
Prentis Road is a couple of minutes further along (on the right).
(2) “OVERGROUND” RAIL
There are two overground suburban rail stations
which are a short walk from SLLS: Streatham and Streatham
Hill. Streatham is the closer of the two.
Thameslink (now “First
Capital Connect”) trains to Sutton and Wimbledon
stop at Streatham Station, and have the advantage of running
straight through from north and central London (e.g. Hendon,
West Hampstead, Kentish Town, Kings Cross Thameslink, Blackfriars).
There are also trains from London Bridge station to Streatham.
Leaving Streatham station, cross the road in front of the station
and take a left, walking first downhill and then uphill along
Streatham High Road. The corner of Prentis Road is about 5 minutes
along on the left.
Other overground
trains run from Victoria (via Balham) and London Bridge
to Streatham Hill. From here, turn right along Streatham
High Road; Prentis Road is about 10 minutes’ walk on the right.
